An active carbon, meaning it attracts impurities like chlorine and holds them to its surface, away from the water you drink. Japan has been using charcoal to purify and soften water for centuries.
"This is a fantastic plastic-free alternative to a Brita water filter, and it's a great conversation starter around the dinner table!"
This Charcoal water filter makes tap water taste great! One charcoal stick lasts 6 months, and it comes ready to be used. It can be used in our Black + Blum Eau Carafe, Personal Carafe or any jug or bottle (*minimum spout opening 30mm / 1.2in).
How does it filter impurities?
Binchotan charcoal doesn’t just remove impurities, it also is able to release minerals like potassium back into the water. It’s covered in tiny little cavities which attract impure ions like chlorine and binds them to the charcoal, leaving the water filtered. In fact, there’s so many of these small holes that just 1 gram of charcoal has enough surface area to cover one tenth the size of a football field!
How long does a charcoal stick last?
Filling your bottle once a day (either our ‘Eau Good’ range or another 800ml bottle), every day for 3 months will require the charcoal to be boiled for 10 minutes to recharge it. Then you can use it for another 3 months.
The charcoal is made from natural wood sticks and dimensions vary (15 to 28mm diameter, maximum length 118mm)
Made in Taiwan
How do I use it to filter water?
Simply take the charcoal from it’s packaging and place it into any bottle, jug or vessel and fill with tap water. You will notice an improvement in taste after about an hour.
Does it ever stop working?
It has about a 6-month life, however if you should notice a decline in taste at 3 months, simply boil it in water for 10 minutes. This will reactivate the active ions within the charcoal and enable it to continue filtering impurities for another 3 months.
Founded by a man on a mission to rid the world of single-use plastic bottles and take away containers, Dan Black leads the design team at Black+Blum, and has done for over 20 years. His single goal is to create products which are functional, innovative and most importantly, made to last.
There’s many things you can do with Binchotan charcoal after you’ve finished using it: it removes bad smells if added to cat litter trays or nappy bins, it removes moisture from the air if you add it to your wardrobe or drawers, and it adds nutrients to the soil if you pop it in with your houseplants (break it up first).
